What a warrant is

A warrant is a written authorization from a judge or magistrate. An arrest warrant allows law enforcement to take a person into custody. A bench warrant is issued by a court, often after a missed court date or an unresolved fine. A search warrant authorizes a search of a place rather than an arrest, and is generally not public until it has been carried out.

What warrant information may show

Warrant information changes quickly. A warrant can be served or recalled at any time and public lists are updated on different schedules, so a report is a starting point rather than a status check.

  • Warrant type, such as arrest or bench
  • Issuing court or agency
  • Date issued, where reported
  • The underlying case or offense

If you think a warrant may exist

Only the issuing court or law enforcement agency can confirm whether a warrant is active. If the warrant may be in your own name, speaking with an attorney before contacting the court is a common first step. Many courts can also say by phone or online whether a case has an outstanding bench warrant.

Questions

Before you search

Can a warrant search tell me if a warrant is active right now?
No. Warrant data can be out of date by the time it is published. Confirm the current status with the issuing court or agency.
What is a bench warrant?
A bench warrant is issued by a judge, usually when someone misses a required court appearance or does not comply with the court’s instructions.
Are all warrants public?
No. Many jurisdictions do not publish warrants online, and sealed warrants are not public. A search without a match does not mean no warrant exists.
Can I search my own name?
Yes. Checking your own name is one of the most common reasons for a warrant search.
