What civil court records cover
Civil cases are disputes between people, businesses, or government bodies that do not involve criminal charges. They include contract and debt claims, personal injury suits, property disputes, evictions, small claims, and many probate matters. The party bringing the case is the plaintiff or petitioner; the party answering it is the defendant or respondent.
What a civil case record may include
A money judgment is the court’s decision that one party owes another. Judgments can later be satisfied, vacated, or appealed, and those updates are not always reflected promptly.
- Party names and roles
- Case type and the amount claimed, where listed
- Filing date, court, and case number
- Judgment or dismissal details
Common reasons to look up civil cases
People check civil records to follow a dispute they are part of, to see whether a judgment was recorded against them, to research a business they are thinking of working with, or to understand a case mentioned in the news.
Questions
Before you search
- What is the difference between civil and criminal court?
- Criminal court decides whether someone broke a criminal law and can impose penalties such as jail. Civil court resolves disputes between parties, usually with money awards or other rulings.
- Does a lawsuit mean the defendant did something wrong?
- No. Filing a lawsuit is only a claim. Many cases are dismissed or settled without any finding of fault.
- Are small claims cases included?
- Small claims cases are civil cases and may appear where the court’s records are available. Many small claims courts publish limited information online.
- How do I see the documents in a civil case?
- Contact the clerk of the court that handled it, or use that court’s own records portal. The case number and court from a report make the request straightforward.
