What a marriage record is
A marriage record documents a legal marriage. It usually begins as a marriage license, which a couple obtains from a county clerk or similar local office before the ceremony. After the ceremony the officiant returns the signed license and the marriage is recorded. The certificate issued afterwards is what most people mean by a marriage record.
Many states also keep a statewide marriage index through a vital records office, which helps when you are not sure which county the marriage took place in.
What marriage records typically contain
A search report shows available references rather than the certificate itself, and the fields that appear depend on the state and the source.
- Full names of both spouses, including maiden names
- Date and place of the marriage
- Ages or dates of birth at the time
- Officiant and witness names on many certificates
Why people look up marriage records
Common reasons include building a family tree, confirming a marriage date or maiden name for personal paperwork, checking whether a relative remarried, and finding the right county to contact for a certified copy. Older marriage certificates often list the couple’s parents, which makes them a frequent starting point for genealogy.
Questions
Before you search
- Are marriage records public?
- In most states at least basic marriage information is public, but access to the full certificate can be limited to the couple, close relatives, or people with a legal interest. Rules differ by state.
- How do I get a certified copy of a marriage certificate?
- Request it from the county clerk where the license was issued or from the state vital records office. A search report can help you identify the county and date to ask for, but it is not a certified copy.
- What if the marriage happened in another state?
- Marriages are recorded where the license was issued, not where the couple lives now. Start with the state you think most likely; the report is not limited to that state when wider matching data is available.
- Can a search confirm someone is currently married?
- No. A marriage record shows that a marriage was recorded, not whether it is still in effect. A later divorce, annulment, or death may not appear in the same records.
