What DUI records are

DUI (driving under the influence) and DWI (driving while intoxicated or impaired) are the names states use for impaired-driving offenses; some use OUI or OWI instead. A DUI usually creates two kinds of record: a criminal court case, and a separate license record kept by the state that licenses the driver. This search covers available court records, not the state license record.

What a DUI court record may include

Sentencing details can include probation, education classes, ignition interlock requirements, or license consequences, depending on the state and the outcome.

  • Charge and degree, such as a first offense or an aggravated DUI
  • Arrest and filing dates
  • Court and case number
  • Plea, disposition, and sentence, where recorded

Reading DUI results

A DUI arrest can end in a conviction, be reduced to a lesser offense such as reckless driving, or be dismissed, so always look at the final disposition. States also set look-back periods that decide how long an earlier DUI counts toward penalties for a new one, and those periods vary widely.

Questions

Before you search

What is the difference between DUI and DWI?
It depends on the state. Some use the terms interchangeably; others use them for different levels of offense. Both refer to impaired-driving charges.
How long does a DUI stay on record?
A DUI conviction generally remains in court records unless it is expunged or sealed, which some states allow and others do not. License records follow separate state rules.
Will a DUI appear if the charge was reduced?
The court record usually shows the original charge and the amended charge or outcome, where that information is available.
Is this the same as an official driving record?
No. An official driving record comes from the state agency that licenses drivers. This search organizes available court records and is not an official driving record.
