Who “owns” a phone number

A phone number is assigned by a carrier to a customer: the person or business responsible for the line. The everyday user can be someone else, such as a family member on a shared line or an employee with a work phone. A phone owner search looks for the people and businesses that available records associate with a number.

What a phone owner search may show

A business listing, a household, and an individual can all be associated with the same number at different times.

  • People associated with the number
  • Businesses that list or have listed the number
  • Addresses associated with those people or businesses
  • Other phone numbers and email addresses linked to a match

Confirming a match

Before relying on a name, check that the dates and location fit. A business listing from several years ago may no longer describe who uses the number today. If you need to contact the person, introduce yourself and give them a chance to confirm who they are.

Questions

Before you search

Is the listed owner the person who called me?
Not necessarily. Lines are shared, numbers are reassigned, and caller ID can be spoofed.
Can I look up business numbers?
Yes. Business listings associated with a number are included where available.
Why is no owner shown for some numbers?
Prepaid, new, unlisted, and many VoIP numbers have little public footprint, so identity results may be limited.
What should a phone owner search not be used for?
Do not use it to harass or threaten anyone, or for employment, tenant screening, credit, insurance, or other FCRA-regulated decisions.
