What a carrier lookup tells you
Every U.S. number is assigned to a carrier, the company that provides the line or the block of numbers it came from. A carrier lookup identifies that company and the type of line, which explains how the number reaches you: over a cell network, a traditional landline, or an internet-based VoIP service.
Mobile, landline, and VoIP
Non-fixed VoIP numbers are easy to obtain, which is why they appear often in spam and scam calls, but many legitimate people and businesses use them too.
- Mobile: a cell phone line from a wireless carrier
- Landline: a fixed line tied to a service address
- Fixed VoIP: an internet phone line set up at a home or business
- Non-fixed VoIP: an internet number that can be created and used anywhere
Number porting and resellers
People can keep their number when they switch carriers, so the carrier first assigned to a number may not be the carrier today. Many phone brands also run on another company’s network, so the carrier shown may be the network operator rather than the brand the customer sees.
Questions
Before you search
- Why does a carrier lookup show a different carrier than I expected?
- The number may have been ported, or the brand may run on another company’s network.
- Can I tell whether a number is a cell phone?
- Usually. The line type shows whether a number is mobile, landline, or VoIP, where that information is available.
- Does the carrier share who owns the number?
- No. Carriers do not publish customer details. Any possible owner information in a report comes from other available public and independent records.
- Why does line type matter?
- It helps you judge a call or text. A landline is tied to a fixed place, while a non-fixed VoIP number can be set up quickly from anywhere.
