How caller identification works

The name that appears on your screen when a call arrives comes from a caller ID database chosen by the carrier, and it is often missing or reduced to a city or “Wireless Caller”. A caller identification search looks the number up in available public and independent records to give more context about who it may belong to.

What you can learn about an unknown caller

Each detail is a clue rather than a confirmation, and together they help you decide whether to answer, call back, or ignore the call.

  • Names of people or businesses associated with the number
  • The city or region the number is associated with
  • Whether it is a mobile, landline, or VoIP line
  • Complaints from other people who received calls

Spoofed numbers and what they mean

Caller ID can be spoofed: callers, including scammers, can make any number appear on your screen, sometimes one that looks local. If a number is spoofed, records describe the real holder of that number, not the person who actually called. Be cautious with calls asking for personal or financial details, and contact organizations through a number you already know.

Questions

Before you search

Why does my phone show only a city or “unknown caller”?
Carriers display names from caller ID databases, which do not cover every number, especially mobile and VoIP lines.
Can a caller identification search tell me if a call was a scam?
It can show complaint indicators and line details that add context, but it cannot prove that a call was or was not a scam.
What can I do about repeated unwanted calls?
Block the number on your phone, add your number to the National Do Not Call Registry for telemarketing calls, and report fraudulent calls to the Federal Trade Commission.
Will the caller know I looked them up?
No. Searches are private, and nothing is shared with the caller.
